Celebrating Cancer Survivor Month
at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center
June is National Cancer Survivor Month, and we’re delighted to share the stories of some of our incredible patients who were treated at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center (DFCC) at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Each
of these stories highlights the resilience of cancer survivors and the critical role of compassionate, comprehensive care in their journeys. They not only survived but were moved to give back, inspired by the care they received at the DFCC.
Cherie Hadsell
Cherie Hadsell’s journey with cancer began with a diagnosis in 2004 that led her to Raul Mena, M.D., and the exceptional team at the DFCC. Opting for Providence Saint Joseph over other institutions, Cherie and her husband, Bill, found confidence in the personalized approach and the genuine care they received. Throughout her treatment, Cherie kept detailed journals, capturing her daily experiences and the encouragement from fellow patients and themedical staff. “The care was extraordinary, from the doctors to the receptionists,” Cherie recalls.
Cherie has now been cancer free for 20 years. Touched by the comprehensive support, she continues, “It made a tough journey a little easier, knowing there were so many rooting for my
recovery.” Grateful for the lifesaving treatment and support, Cherie and her husband have become dedicated donors, giving back to the place that offered them hope in their
darkest times.
Nat Rubinfeld
Nat Rubinfeld’s experience at the DFCC was characterized by warmth and expert care, which he fondly recalls as critical during his treatment journey. Initially drawn to the center for its excellent reputation and convenient location, Nat found much
more than medical expertise; he discovered a caring community that significantly eased his anxiety about treatments. “The administration and nursing folks at the DFCC were always warm and welcoming,” Nat remembers. “Whether it was my first visit or as a regular, the staff made a real difference with their
upbeat and supportive approach.”
Nat’s gratitude extends beyond his recovery, reflecting on the personalized attention that made daunting treatments bearable. “The compassion was so great, it was like taking candy from a baby,” he shares, highlighting the comfort provided by the
medical staff’s considerate interactions. Today, Nat’s journey inspires him to give back and support the DFCC, hoping to ensure that future patients receive the same level of care that was so instrumental to his healing.
Trisha Simmons
For Trisha Simmons, the DFCC was more than a treatment facility — it was a source of strength and healing. Facing a late-stage diagnosis, Trisha found comfort not only in the medical treatment but also in the supplementary therapies like sound healing and yoga, which she credits with helping her maintain
her spirits. “The center provided so much more than medical care; it offered emotional and spiritual healing,” Trisha shares. Her story is enriched by the meaningful interactions with caregivers, who would often sing with her, adding a touch of joy to her treatments.
Today, Trisha gives back by delivering thoughtful gifts to patients and caregivers, continuing the cycle of compassion that she found so invaluable. Her efforts underscore her belief that “small gestures can bring enormous relief during treatment.”
